Face-to-Face Fundraising and the Digital Street and Door Diary System

The Importance of Face-to-Face Fundraising

Face-to-face fundraising is a powerful and personal method for charities to connect directly with the public, share their mission, and inspire meaningful support. Whether conducted on the street or at doorsteps, this form of engagement fosters trust and transparency, helping donors understand the tangible impact of their contributions. It is a cornerstone of fundraising, generating sustainable income and strengthening relationships between charities and their supporters.

Cii’s Involvement in the Development of the Diary System

In 2017, Charities Institute Ireland (Cii) took a proactive role in addressing challenges identified in the Report of the Consultative Panel on Charitable Fundraising, published by the Charities Regulator. This report highlighted concerns around transparency, compliance, and public trust in fundraising activities. One key recommendation was developing a structured location management system to coordinate face-to-face fundraising activities and address the potential for public dissatisfaction due to overlapping efforts by different charities.

In response, Cii collaborated with the Face-to-Face Fundraising Forum and stakeholders in the sector to develop a solution. Partnering initially with the Institute of Fundraising in the UK and later with MadeMedia, a specialist digital agency, Cii launched the Street and Door Diary System. This innovative digital platform was designed to address the specific needs of the Irish charity sector, providing a transparent, compliant, and effective way to manage fundraising locations.

How the Diary System Works

  1. Compliance with Best Practices: The system aligns with the recommendations of the Charities Regulator and the principles outlined in the 2017 report. It ensures that fundraising activities are conducted ethically and professionally, safeguarding public trust.
  2. Location Coordination: Charities and their third-party agencies must book locations in advance, preventing clashes where multiple organisations operate in the same area simultaneously. This organised approach reduces public frustration and enhances the fundraising experience for both donors and fundraisers.
  3. Real-Time Management: The Diary provides unique log-ins for in-house teams and agencies, allowing them to book, monitor, and adjust site usage in real-time. This ensures flexibility and accountability in fundraising operations.
  4. Public Awareness: By clearly defining where fundraising activities occur, the system reassures the public that these efforts are legitimate and part of an agreed, professional framework.

Supporting Ethical and Sustainable Fundraising

Cii’s leadership extends beyond the Diary system. The Face-to-Face Fundraising Forum meets three times a year and provides a space for fundraisers to collaborate, share insights, and refine practices. This forum ensures that the Diary system continues to evolve based on user feedback and the sector's changing needs.

The Code of Conduct underpins the Diary for Face-to-Face Fundraising, which outlines professionalism, respect, and integrity standards. Charities and agencies using the system must adhere to these guidelines, demonstrating their commitment to best practices and public accountability.

Why This Matters

The Street and Door Diary System protects the integrity of face-to-face fundraising by:

  • Ensuring compliance with the Charities Act 2009 and the recommendations of the Charities Regulator.
  • Preventing scheduling conflicts that could undermine public trust and goodwill.
  • Promoting a unified standard of excellence across the sector.

Looking Ahead

Face-to-face fundraising remains a vital source of engagement and income for charities in Ireland. Through the Diary system, Cii has established a robust infrastructure that supports the long-term sustainability of this essential fundraising method. By prioritising transparency, accountability, and collaboration, Cii is safeguarding the future of charitable fundraising and ensuring it continues to thrive as a force for good in communities across Ireland. This commitment reflects Cii’s dedication to supporting the charity sector, protecting its reputation, and fostering meaningful connections between charities and the public.
