Charities Institute Ireland Pays Tribute to Brother Kevin Crowley

Cii honours Brother Kevin Crowley, founder of the Capuchin Day Centre, for his lifelong dedication to supporting people experiencing homelessness.

Charities Institute Ireland extends its deepest sympathies on the passing of Brother Kevin Crowley OFM Cap, the founder of the Capuchin Day Centre for Homeless People in Dublin.

Moved by the sight of homeless men searching for food in bins, Brother Kevin set up the Centre in 1969 with a simple but powerful mission: to offer dignity and support to those most in need. What began as a small effort has grown into a vital lifeline serving over 1,000 meals every day, along with clothing, medical care, shower facilities, family support and advice services.

Brother Kevin’s open-door approach welcomed all, regardless of age, race, nationality, gender, religion or politics. This commitment to unconditional care turned the Centre into a trusted refuge and a cornerstone of homeless services in Dublin.

Charities Institute Ireland honours Brother Kevin’s lifetime of dedication and the lasting legacy he has left for the charitable sector. His work embodies the values we hold dear: compassion, inclusion and unwavering service to vulnerable communities.

During his lifetime Brother Kevin received well-deserved recognition, including the Freedom of the City of Dublin in 2015 and a visit from Pope Francis in 2018. He always saw these honours as a tribute to those who rely on the Centre every day.

Since retiring in 2022, Brother Kevin’s legacy continues through the Capuchin Friars and all who serve at the Centre. At a time when homelessness remains a critical issue, his example reminds us what true kindness and commitment can achieve.

Charities Institute Ireland offers sincere condolences to the Capuchin Friars, staff, volunteers, donors and everyone connected with the Centre. We thank Brother Kevin for his remarkable service and pledge to keep supporting those in need, inspired by his example.

May Brother Kevin rest in peace. May his spirit inspire us all.
