Charities Institute Ireland disappointed to learn that recommendations for reform of Garda vetting have been pushed back.
A inter-departmental group tasked with examining the overall reform and extension of Garda vetting was due to report to Justice Minister Helen McEntee by the end of last year. A recent report in The Journal confirmed that this deadline was missed and the group now plans to submit its recommendations to the minister in the second quarter of this year.
Critically, this will mean a further delay to the legislative changes which are needed to overhaul and update the current vetting process, which falls well short of what our members believe to be vital to fulfil their safeguarding responsibilities.
CEO of Cii Áine Myler has written to the Department of Justice and appealed to all the relevant parties to expedite this important review, introduce the necessary legislation, and provide the critical resources to ensure that our vetting system is effective, efficient, and proportionate.
Charities Institute Ireland stands ready to further support the review by way of stakeholder engagement, presentation, member survey or any other input that the Review Group believes may be helpful to its important work.
