IFI Next Generation Programme Manager

The IFI wishes to appoint a Next Generation Programme Manager, to develop and deliver a comprehensive next generation programme of activities, consolidating links between IFI, screen and education sectors and relevant organisations working with young people. 



Two-year fixed-term contract (with a 6-month probation period)

Reporting to: 

IFI Head of Education

Key Relationships:

 IFI Heads of Departments, Screen Ireland, Fresh Film Festival, Young Irish Filmmakers, partner organisations, National Talent Academies


Salary scale: 

Starting salary will depend on experience and will be according to the following Senior Manager pay scale Levels: L1 40,800, L2 41,820, L3 42,865, L4 43,937, LS1 45,475, LS2 47,066 (LS – Long Service Increment, after 3 further years and 6 years respectively) + 24 days annual leave + other benefits.

At the IFI's historic home in Eustace Street, Temple Bar, our diverse audiences and loyal members enjoy our 3 cinemas, IFI Irish Film Archive's research and access facilities, IFI Film Shop and IFI Café Bar; and our four digital streaming platforms, IFI@Home, IFI Archive Player, IFI@Schools and IFI International. The IFI has developed strategic objectives around three core activities:


EXHIBIT: Providing audiences throughout Ireland with access to the finest independent, Irish and international cinema

PRESERVE: Preserving and promoting Ireland's moving image heritage through the IFI Irish Film Archive

EDUCATE: Providing opportunities for audiences of all ages and backgrounds to learn and critically engage with film through IFI Education


Overview of job

As part of the IFI, IFI Education delivers a Careers-in-Screen programme annually, connecting young people (15-18) with screen industries through events comprising talks, workshops and screenings. The new role will undertake to establish a distinct and tangible profile for Next Generation Film, developing the Careers in Screen programme, while liaising with and building on links with other relevant organisations. The Programme Manager will first carry out a scoping exercise of existing activities across Ireland, while meeting key stakeholders to identify gaps and needs. Through a planned schedule of high profile events, they will aim to raise awareness of the industry among relevant bodies and organisations such as educators, career guidance counsellors, youth workers, as well as prompting interest in young people to carry out their own research. The Manager will initiate and develop their own ideas, and to compliment and consolidate current IFI activities. 


The Next Gen. Programme Manager will work closely with the HOD (Head of Department) and other managers and stakeholders to devise and implement Next Gen. activities, with practical and feasible programmes, working towards a Next Gen. Strategic Framework in association with Screen Ireland, as key stakeholder. They will keep abreast of new developments and skills gaps, creating opportunities for skills development among young people and Next Gen. filmmakers.


Candidate competencies and skills

• Comprehensive knowledge and several years' experience of the screen sector and working with young people.

• Knowledge and experience of the education landscape in Ireland, including new curricular developments and the location of film across curricula, both formal and informal. 

• Awareness and understanding of current pathways to industry, through education, vocational or other.

• Project Management & Event Management experience. 

• Ability to manage budgets, financial reporting and thorough record keeping.

• Understanding and experience of digital file management. 

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Self-starter, motivated with a strong ability to work independently.

• Experience in developing policy in an arts environment is highly desirable.

• Demonstrated ability to research and resolve problems using a variety of resources and tools.

• 3rd level qualification in a related discipline or relevant experience supplemented with equivalent.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Developing and growing links between Screen Ireland, education providers at secondary level, Career Guidance professionals and arts organisations working with young people, locating Next Gen. within broader screen strategy and training needs.

• Scoping out current provision and identifying needs and gaps.

• Exploring the potential for accredited work-based learning programmes for young people such as traineeships, liaising with National Talent Academies.

• Work closely with IFI Head of Education and other HODs to ensure Next Gen. representation across IFI programmes and events

• Establish a Next Gen. programme of events with national reach, with aim of profile raising as well as linking in with existing initiatives around young filmmakers. 

• Work closely with the Screen Ireland team (across marketing, distribution & skills) as a key stakeholder in the project

• Research the potential for filmmaking in current and new curricula, framing Next Gen. within broader context of curricula and vocational training such as LCA.

• Identify pathways for students pursuing film in different curricular and vocational training contexts for e.g. students taking new Leaving Certificate subject, Drama, Film and Theatre Studies; students taking Leaving Certificate Applied Communications; students doing Transition Year film.

• Explore accredited training possibilities with National Talent Academies for entry-level training/shadowing programmes, accessible by application. 

• Tap into young filmmaker network, exploring possibility for ambassadorial or champion roles within a national strategy.
