Job Title: Data Scientist

Location: Dublin

Reporting to: Head of Internal Systems

Contract: Indefinite Duration

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Salary: €55,000 - €60,000 per annum DOE

About FoodCloud:

FoodCloud has a vision for a world where no good food goes to waste. We are a purpose-driven organisation working to build a more equitable, inclusive and circular food system. Data plays a central role in how we understand our impact, improve decision-making and strengthen the systems and products that support our work.

About the Job:

We are seeking a technically strong Data Scientist to help shape the next phase of FoodCloud's data capability.

This role combines hands-on analytical problem-solving with strong engineering foundations. The successful candidate will improve the structure and performance of our data environment, contribute to warehouse optimisation, and help evolve our current architecture toward a more scalable and usable warehouse model. Alongside this, they will apply analytical thinking to support insight generation, decision-making and data-informed product development.

We are looking for someone with strong engineering skills. Governance experience is welcome, but not essential, as we are open to supporting the right candidate to build that capability over time. A background in product or close collaboration with product and engineering teams would be a strong advantage.

Key Responsibilities:

Advanced Analytics and Insight Generation

  • Analyse complex datasets to identify patterns, trends and opportunities that support strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Develop analytical models, metrics and frameworks that improve organisational understanding and support action.
  • Support the design of clear, useful and impactful reporting and analytical outputs.
  • Monitor critical data workflows and reporting dependencies, proactively identify issues, and work with technical colleagues to resolve failures, inconsistencies or performance problems.

Data Modelling and Pipeline Development
  • Contribute to the design and optimisation of FoodCloud's data models, pipelines and warehouse structures.
  • Build and maintain reliable ETL/ELT workflows and analytical data pipelines that support reporting, insight generation and product-related data use cases.
  • Help improve the performance, quality and maintainability of the data warehouse, BI tools and broader analytics environment.
  • Support the evolution of current architecture, including opportunities to transition elements of a data lake approach into a more structured warehouse model.
  • Work with technical colleagues to improve data accessibility, consistency and trust across systems.

Product and Cross-functional Collaboration
  • Partner with internal systems, product development, architecture and customer-facing teams to identify and deliver valuable data use cases.
  • Contribute to the development of customer reporting and product-related data features where relevant.
  • Translate business questions into clear analytical approaches and communicate findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support the wider organisation with training and problem solving for staff and clients.
  • Bring a product mindset to data work, ensuring solutions are useful, scalable and aligned with user needs.
  • Identify process and system improvement opportunities where analytics and better data design can add value.
  • Operate effectively in an evolving data and systems environment, adapting approaches as organisational needs and technical priorities change.
  • Support teams through changes to data structures, reporting practices and governance standards by communicating clearly and enabling adoption.

Governance and Organisational Capability
  • Support the continued development of data governance, data quality and documentation practices across the organisation.
  • Own data governance for created data products, ensuring clear documentation covering definition, owner, and any caveats for every model, table, or metric.
  • Take ownership of assigned data products, pipelines and analytical outputs, ensuring high standards of delivery, documentation and follow-through.
  • Show initiative in identifying opportunities, addressing issues early, and supporting colleagues to achieve shared outcomes.
  • Implement and maintain data quality checks, validation rules and integrity controls to improve trust in reporting and analytical outputs.
  • Contribute to stronger shared definitions, trusted metrics and improved data literacy.
  • Help shape the roadmap for analytics and data capability development.
  • Develop reporting to align with regulation and industry standards, such as ESG, CSRd, etc
  • Ensure all data and reporting practices align with international standards such as: CSRD, GRI, UN SDGs and GDPR.

Key Skills and Experience:
  • Significant experience in data science, advanced analytics, decision science or a closely related technical data role.
  • Proficiency in core technical tools such as Python, Git, and CI/CD practices.
  • Strong SQL and strong analytical capability, including working with large and complex datasets and data lake/warehouse technologies.
  • Strong grounding in data modelling and the structures needed for reliable analysis and reporting.
  • Experience contributing to ETL/ELT pipelines and collaborating on data engineering workflows, pipelines, observation and maintenance.
  • Experience improving analytics environments, including warehouse optimisation or data platform enhancement.
  • Significant use of AI and agentic software development.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft-based data and analytics tooling.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly translate and explain technical findings to business, technical, and product stakeholders.
  • Experience working in or alongside product teams would be a strong advantage.

Desirable:
  • Experience in forecasting, experimentation, statistical modelling, segmentation, or predictive analytics.
  • Experience supporting customer-facing analytics or products.
  • Experience helping move an organisation from fragmented or lake-based reporting toward a more structured warehouse model.
  • Familiarity with tools like Azure Synapse and Airflow or similar tools.
  • Degree in Data Science, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

Benefits Overview:
